To the Editor:
In recent weeks there has been much said about Sheriff James Wade's "controversial" term in office. The people have a right to know the whole story.
During the sheriff's term in office, burglaries have declined by 16 percent and more than $1.7 million in stolen property has been recovered. The jail has made more than $160,000 by housing out-of-county inmates. This money was returned to the county's coffers. The jail has been state-certified every year sine James Wade took office, and it was one of three jails in the state that was certified by the American Medical Association. His civil division collected of $85,000 that was returned to the county coffers.
James Wade built a reserve division of 50 certified reserve officers. These men volunteer their time to work in all the areas of the department. Their contribution to the department has saved the county more than $226,000 in overtime pay.
James Wade promised hat he would wage war on drugs. Since being elected he has started "Just Say No" clubs in every middle school in the county and has formed an Explorer Scout group for teens. He believes that in order to win the war on drugs, our children must be educated James Wade has seized more than $6.5 million in drugs and with these seizures came the confiscation of eight vehicles and approximately $50,000 in cash and other properties.
James Wade and his department were featured on the cover of the Texas Narcotics Officers Association magazine for their fight against drugs. James Wade and his department were commended in a letter form the governor for their efforts in fighting drugs. The letter stated that the Orange County Sheriff's department was No. 1 in the state for their drug-related arrests.
These are some of the facts. James Wade has been a controversial sheriff, but explain how anyone that has made the changes and improvements in a department, has fought drugs as effectively, reduced the crime rate and refused to be a "yes man to professional politicians and dope pushers can be anything but controversial?
