Walker trial postponed until Oct. 21

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Suspended Ottawa County Sheriff Ed Walker today got his gambling and extortion trial delayed until Oct. 21.
U.S. Senior District Judge H. Dale Cook this morning granted a defense motion seeking the postponement for Walker, who recently hired a new attorney.  The federal trial was supposed to start Monday.
“The court has been very gracious in already having given extensions to the defense,” attorney Gary Richardson said, who replaced the Stipe law firm to represent Walker.  Walker was indicted in May as part of a state and federal investigation into illegal gambling activity in northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas.
Investigation also led to indictments against 20 other people, many of whom have pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in Walker’s trial.  The first-term sheriff has characterized the matter as political.  Walker did not run for re-election this year.
