Sound-off

Sheriff’s office

Regarding Undersheriff Mike Smith taking over the sheriff’s office, Commissioner James Leake made another asinine statement.  From the Miami News-Record on May 21, Leake said he believes Smith is “quite capable of handling the job” and assured the rural residents of the county that they still have law enforcement.  What he should have said is, Mike Smith has already had much of experience running the sheriff’s office.  When Sheriff Ed Walker had his heart attack and was not able to work, Mike Smith was there every day doing the sheriff’s job, taking care of rural Ottawa County.  A lot of us felt safer with Smith as the Boss than we did with Walker.  Now would be a good time for the News-Record to find out just how many days Walker has not been in the office working.  And give Mike Smith the credit he deserves for a fine job well done.

Sheriff Walker

The only things Ottawa County are known for is crooked sheriffs and naïve residents.  For the people who think all this stuff with Sheriff Walker is politically motivated, just stop and think.  Walker announced that he was not going to run again for office when he started having all these health problems.  So if nobody thought he was going to run for office why would they try to do something to oust him if it was politically motivated?  The attorney general couldn’t care less about what happens in Ottawa County.  He’s got bigger fish to fry.  So the only reason he is investigating the sheriff is because obviously there is evidence and there’s something going on.
He could not have been indicted unless there was hard evidence.  We ought to be glad the county commissioners are looking out for the county because by asking him to step down, they’re saving themselves from a lawsuit.  If Sheriff Walker is on probation, he can’t carry a gun.  If he’s out trying to arrest somebody but can’t carry a gun to defend himself and he gets shot, he could have sued the county.
